E string raises - returning sharp
I'm having trouble with the fourth string on my LDG. When I raise the E's (using the C pedal or the E-raise lever), it comes back sharp. If I lower the E's, it comes back in tune. I can't see what's getting hung up.
Any ideas what this could be?

Well there was 5 different mechanisms for the history of the LDG ('73 to later 80's); so I'd have to see the underneath of your LDG to give you at least 4 different reasons it could be happening for your particular mechanism. If you can't post a pic; I can for you if you email me a pic or two at sshawaiian2362@gmail.com(yes the luxury of being a "Moderator"...ah...ha...LOL)

Here's a picture of the underside. The changer has 3 raises and 2 lowers

Re: E string raises - returning sharp
Most commonly it's the roller nut hanging up. Maybe not, but here's test that should reveal that:
Raise the E. When it comes back sharp press on that length of string behind the nut momentarily and see if comes back correct.
Normally the string tension behind the nut should be equal to that of the string tension in front of the nut regardless of pedal actuation. When you come back sharp, it is not equal because the roller is hanging.
Solution clean and lubricate the nut/axle.

Thanks for the tip Jim. Unfortunately, that didn’t do it. What’s the next thing I can try/check?

Re: E string raises - returning sharp
Does the 8th string return proper?
If the 8th string is returning to E. The nut roller would be first thing to check. Also check the alignment of the string across the roller. If the string is cut to long and is wound toward key head with lot of wraps. Side pressure on roller can cause problems. A small burr on the roller can be hard to find, It will only drag when the burr is contacting inside the slot.
Good Luck in cause and cure of problem.

Re: E string raises - returning sharp
Good news. I got the nut all lubed up and put fresh set of strings on, and the problem is solved.
Thanks a lot
Related question - what do people use for lube? I always used nut sauce on my Tele, so that’s what I went with, and it seemed to do the trick

I believe that non-paraffin dry Teflon lube is best for pedal steel mechanisms. It doesn’t gum up with age like oils do and doesn’t attract dust, dirt, hair etc.
